Chapter Three: We see through a glass darkly (1 Corinthians 13:12)
The first example turns up in the very first verse of the Bible. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). Have no doubt about it, that was His first creative act in the material world. However, it was also his very first creative act in the spiritual world. That ’s easy to overlook. Each verse is worded as though it applies to the physical world only.
Most verses apply equally to both worlds. Learning to understand that can be difficult. Throughout the Bible we will see scripture dealing, at the same moment, with both worlds. As our learning curve progresses, we will always be required to spot the invisible aspect of each and every verse we read.
Here are the first few examples of the intricate way the physical and the spiritual are always seen interacting. These first six are perhaps among the more easily seen ways that relationship is expressed. They are also more easily understood. Each will be expressing the physical/spiritual relationship through specific situations. Some may appear somewhat vague and readers might question whether some of them actually apply.
At the same time, the first six are more universally recognized and accepted. You will probably have no difficulty recognizing these six. They should initially help to show that the relationship between the two comes up repeatedly. These six might seem obvious. We will begin with a few easily understood examples. Take a deep breath; on second thought, take two. When you’re ready we’ll begin.
Did you take those deep breaths? Are you sure? Okay. Here we go.
1)heaven (the spiritual) and earth (the physical) (Genesis 1:1 and others),
2) thevisible(the physical) and the invisible(the spiritual) (Colossians 1:15). Get the idea?
3) The real (the spiritual) and the image (the physical), or mirror image, (proverbs 27:19, James 1:23-25, Corinthians 13:12),
4) the law (the physical), or Moses, and theprophets(the spiritual) (Matthew 22:40, John 1:45),
5) thefirst Adam (the physical) and thelast Adam (the spiritual) (1 Corinthians 15:45-48), and
6) themind (the physical) and theheart(the spiritual) (Matthew 22:37, Hebrews 8:10, Hebrews 10:16).
See how it works? The pattern you see here is repeated throughout the Bible. God always has His part (the invisible) and man always has his (the visible). They are working together and are inseparable. While these six ways the interaction between them comes up may seem like a lot, if you are willing to stretch, just a little, you will notice more than six. Perhaps surprisingly, they begin showing up in the very beginning of the Bible and appear throughout. If the Bible introduces teaching about this relationship at the outset and appears so many times, it must be at the core of its teaching.
These next examples have all been found in Genesis.
7) And God separated the light from the darkness. (Genesis 1:4b ESV)
8) And God said, “let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. (Genesis 1: 14a NLT)
9) And let them be for signs and for seasons, … (Genesis 1:14b NLT)
10) …and to separate the light from the darkness. (Genesis 1:18b NLT)
11) And God said, “Let the waters swarm (the earthly)with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly (the heavenly)above the earth across the expanse of the heavens. (Genesis 1: 20 ESV)
12) And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. (Genesis 1:23 ESV)
13) Be fruitful and fill the earth and subdue it, … (Genesis 1:28a NLT)
14) And there was evening and morning, the sixth day. (Genesis 1:31 NLT)
We might tend to express morning before evening. Our day begins with morning. In scripture, darkness comes first, then light enters.
15) These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. (Genesis 2:4a NLT)
16) God formedman from the dust from the ground (the physical) and breathed into his nostrils(the spiritual) the breath of life (Genesis 2;7).
17) …the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:9)
18) This at last is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; … (Genesis 2:23b NLT)
19) So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, … (Genesis 3:6 NLT)
20 …he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. (Genesis 3:15b NLT)
21) Now Able was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. (Genesis 4:2b ESV)
22) In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. (Genesis 4:3,4a NLT)
23) I have set my bow in the cloud and it shall be a sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, … (Genesis 9:12 NLT)
Notice that man was a part of establishing that very early covenant. A covenant is an agreement!

Our language is very adequate to describe or explain things from the material world. It’s where we live and we have developed our vocabulary so that any possible situation can be clearly communicated. We have had lots of practice. The invisible world is an entirely different matter. We don’t really have a clear perception of what that world will be like and our language may be far from adequate to describe anything from it (even if we knew what it was like). We are limited in two signifiant ways. We neither have a language that can adequately communicate things from the invisible world; but, neither do we understand that world, itself.
Since we are using a language designed for this world to describe things or events from the other world, our attempt to communicate things about it is bound to fall short. As we read our Bibles, we understand the way it describes things from the visible world. What is easily missed is that while it is describing events that had taken place in the material world, it is also alluding to events from the invisible world. The entire Bible is about the spiritual world, but is being told in language designed to be understood in this world. This is my attempt to look beyond our world and catch a glimpse of the invisible world.
The interaction of these relationships don’t end with Genesis 50. They also come up in Exodus.
40) Moses (the physical) and Aaron (the spiritual) (appearing throughout Exodus)

42) The pillar of cloud by day (the visible) and the pillar of fire by night (the invisible) did not depart from before the people. (Exodus 13: 22, Numbers 14:14))
