Chapter Eleven: The Gospels
1739) …do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the holy spirit,(Matthew 1:20a ESV)
Possibly of all the passages that show how connected the physical and spiritual working together, this is the most significant. Jesus was actually conceived by both God, the spiritual, and Mary, the physical. It is not more clearly stated than this!

1763) The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. (Matthew 10:2-4 ESV)
Quite often we find names coming up in pairs, sometimes as brothers. The physical and the spiritual are often looked on as brothers. What had been a very close relationship in the natural world is depicting the same very close relationship that exists between the physical and spiritual worlds. Among the disciples, half represented the physical and half represented the spiritual. It was not eleven to one. It was six to six.

The physical normally precedes the spiritual. John the Baptist is something of a precursor to Jesus, and they were cousins, a very close relationship in the natural world.

This one might be a little tough. The darkness was the time during which God had separated himself from Jesus and He could feel it. It represented the physical separation from God (the visible).
