The Book of Romans is one of the more frequently read books of the Bible. Not only have I read it many times, but during the course of this search, I had examined it completely in both the ESV and the NLT searching for verses that demonstrate the visible/invisible relationship, the subject of this effort and I had found many.
Following my search, I eventually found myself, once again, reading Romans, just relaxing, relieved to have finished my search. Then…..in Romans 1:1, the very first verse I read, I found the following: Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God.There it was again.Once again, I reluctantly searched again through Romans and spotted thirty-two additional verses that plainly demonstrated the relationship between the physical and the spiritual. I couldn’t believe it! Why had I not already seen so many?
I had not noticed them because they are easily overlooked. We read in this world. God writes in the invisible world. To me, they had initially been invisible. Never-the-less, the frequency of the relationship is overwhelming. Recognizing that relationship is critical to understanding scripture. Even after having spent considerable effort trying to demonstrate the importance of the relationship, I didn’t fully understand it, nor see it, myself.

By this point, I suspect you have peeked at the last page to see just how many times the interaction between the physical and the spiritual has actually been identified here. I would have. My hope is that you have also noticed the very wide array of situations that reflect that interaction. Virtually every kind of situation we humans encounter involves both the physical and the spiritual and there they are, right on the pages of our Bible, always appearing functioning together. Whoever would have guessed?
Not only do we see them interacting on the pages of the Bible, but we also see them interacting, just as frequently, in our own lives. In addition, science has also observed it taking place in the natural world. Science has even attempted to offer its own explanation for it and calls it Newtons’ Third Law of Motion which says: “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”.
What we may have thought of as an exclusively biblical concept is also being observed outside the Bible. Maybe that shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Bible covers virtually every kind of experience that we can encounter. Science might look on it as something that must be overcome. God’s people need to look on it as something that needs to be understood. It’s about human relationships, teaching us to live well even as we encounter many different situations, all of which involve our relationships.
The recurring situations which all reflect the visible and the invisible are all making the identical point. God is involved in our lives in everything that happens. Didn’t He promise He would never leave us or forsake us? He doesn’t miss a single event. He is as good as His word.
It’s not simply about overcoming. It’s about accepting one another as we are and still developing good relationships with one another in spite of our differences. If both parties are of the same mind, if they both want to have good relationships, it might allow things to move along smoothly. However, all too often, the parties are of completely different minds.
That’s where the rubber meets the road. We are to love one another and no provision is given us for exceptions. Unexpected conflict does not offer us a way out. When we encounter the ugly, we are still commanded to love. It might be easy to love the beautiful, the helpful, the friendly, the agreeable, or the docile. However, the demanding, angry, abusive, aggressive, or selfish are not excluded. We are to love each other even when it’s difficult.
That means we are to love others when they clearly wish we were dead. We usually think that when we extend love to someone, they will reciprocate. Not everyone does. Jesus was able to love even those who hated Him. The hatred gradually mounted as people came to realize that He was attempting to prompt them all to make a choice in the spiritual world, a place that they were reluctant to go. Even though humans fail to cooperate, it never caused God to slow down, reject them, or change his approach.
Many were not willing to go there; but providing that opportunity was His purpose in coming to earth as a man. Eternal life with God is a choice and Jesus was always attempting to enable people to deal with that choice. Even though He was rejected by many, He always presented them with that choice, even when He already knew they would reject Him. He loved them no matter what, not just when it was easy.
That is the way we are to win the lost. It comes only through love. That is the assignment God has given us. We are to win the lost. Have you ever wondered what your place in the Body of Christ might be? Wonder about it no longer. We might question the circumstances or method; but, the ultimate assignment does not change. Each of us is to win the lost and we are to do it through love.
Tolerance does not necessarily translate to acceptance. We are to accept people irrespective of their actions or beliefs. However, we may reject their choices. Learning to do both simultaneously is a learning experience of its own. We tend to take an immediate and open stance against their position and build a wall between us. When someone is wrong, we want to set the record straight. However, we need to learn how to reject their ideas without rejecting them.
Failing to learn how will have ever growing consequences and gradually become hatred. If we hate our brother, we cannot win him. We cannot be living in Gods will if we harbor hatred, even if it seems to be deserved. Hate has to go; love must prevail.
