Chapter Five: The Struggle

274) On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. (1 Samuel 1:4,5 ESV)

275) And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me… (1 Samuel 1:11a ESV)

276) and not forget your servant, butwill give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head. (1 Samuel 1:11b ESV)

277) As she continued praying before the lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. (1 Samuel 1: 12 ESV)

278)And Elkanah knew his wife,   and the Lord remembered her. (1 Samuel 1:19 ESV)

279)And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord”. (1 Samuel 1: 20 ESV)

280) The barren has born seven, butshe who has many is forlorn. (1 Samuel 2:5b ESV)

281) He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. (1 Samuel 2: 8a ESV)

282) He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, … (1 Samuel 2:9 ESV)

283) …he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed. (1Samuel 2:10c

ESV)

284) Indeed the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceivedand bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord. (1 Samuel 2:21 ESV)

285) At that time, Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dimso that he could not see,

(1 Samuel 3:2 ESV)

286) …was lying down in his own place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. (1 Samuel 3:3 ESV)

287) Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. (1 Samuel 3:7 ESV)

288) …for the iniquity that he knew because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever. (1 Samuel 3:13, 14 ESV)

289) Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.( 1 Samuel 4:17b ESV)

290) As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died,… (1 Samuel 4:18a ESV)

291) And she named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” Because the ark of God has been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband

292) So you must make images of your tumors and images of your mice that ravage the land and give glory to the God of Israel.(1 Samuel 6:5 ESV)

293) And take the ark of the Lord and place it on the cart (1 Samuel 6:8a ESV)

294) ….and put in a box its side the figures of gold, which you are returning to himas a guilt offering. (1 Samuel 6:8b ESV)

295) So Saul ate with Samuel that day. And when they came down from the high place into the city,(1 Samuel 9:24b ESV)

296) … a bed was spread for Saul on the roof, and he lay down to sleep. (1 Samuel 9: 25 ESV)

297) And they will give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from their hand.

298) Then the spirit of the Lord will rush upon you and you will prophecy with them and be turned into another man. (1 Samuel 10:6 ESV)

299) When he mustered them at Bezek, the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the people of Judah thirty thousand.(1 Samuel 11:8 ESV)

300) As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. And Samuel said to him, The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you. (1 Samuel 15:22,23 ESV)

301) For the Lord sees not as a man sees:man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7b ESV)

302) There remains the youngest(the least of men), but behold,he is keeping the sheep (serving the Lord). And the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward.

303) Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. … (1 Samuel 16:11a ESV)

304) Then Samuel took the anointing oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.

305) “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skilled in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the Lord is with him. (1 Samuel 16:18 ESV)

306) And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and  a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. (1 Samuel 16 20 ESV)

307) And the Philistines stood on  the mountain on the one side and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side,   with a valley between them, (1Samuel 17:3 ESV)

308) …but David went back and forth from Saul    to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

309) And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisionsand went, as Jesse had commanded him. (1 Samuel 17:20a ESV)

310) And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line. (1 Samuel 17:20b ESV)

311) Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them. (1 Samuel 17:36 ESV)

312) And David said, The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver  me from the hand of this philistine,” (1 Samuel 17:37 ESV)

313) …and David strapped the sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them……Then he took his staff in hand (1 Samuel 17:39, 40a ESV)

314) Then David said to the Philistine, you come to me with a spear and a with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, … (1 Samuel 17:46 ESV)

315) And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. (1 Samuel 17:46 ESV)

316) So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. (1 Samuel 17:50 ESV)

317) And the men of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines and they plundered their camp. (1 Samuel 17:53 ESV)

318) AndDavid took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent. (1 Samuel 17:54 ESV)

319) Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed. (1 Samuel 18:30 ESV)

320) For he took his life in his hand and he struck down the Philistine, and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. (1 Samuel 19:5 ESV)

321) Foras long as the son of Jesse liveson earth, neither you    nor your kingdom shall be established. (1 Samuel 20:31 ESV)

322) And Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy and said to him, “Go and carry them to the city…..(verse 42c) And he arose and Jonathan went into the city. (1 Samuel 21:40b-42c ESV)

323) So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away. (1Samuel 22:6 ESV)

324) Then the prophet Gad said to David. “Do not remain in the stronghold,   depart, and go into the land of Judah.” (1 Samuel 22:5b ESV)

325) So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth. (1 Samuel 22:5c ESV)

326) …and he inquired of the Lord for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. (1 Samuel 22:10 ESV)

327)…But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to    strike the priests of the Lord. (1 Samuel 22:17c ESV)

328) Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” (1 Samuel 22:18b ESV)

329) And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, (1 Samuel 22: 18a ESV)

330) Now David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah to the south of Jeshimon. And Saul and his men went to seek him. And David was told so he went down to the rock and lived in the wilderness of Moan. (1 Samuel 23:25 ESV)

331) And David said to his men, “Every man strap on his sword.   David also strapped on his sword.(1 Samuel 15:13a ESV)

332) And about four hundred men went up after David, while two hundred remained with the baggage. (1 Samuel 25:13b ESV)

333) Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my Lord a sure house, because my Lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. (1 Samuel 25:28 ESV)

334) In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as stone. (1 Samuel 25:37 ESV)

335) And about ten days laterthe Lord struck Nabal and he died. (1 Samuel 25:38 ESV)

336) … The Lord forbid that I should put out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. But take now the spearthat is at his hand and the jar of water, and let us go,” (1 Samuel 26:11 ESV)

337) Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight,  so may my life be precious in the sight of the Lord, and may he deliver me out of all tribulation. (1 Samuel 26: 24 ESV)

338) Then Saul will dispute of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape    out of his hand. (1 Samuel 27:1 ESV)

339) because go all the great spoil they had taken  from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.(1 Samuel 30:16 ESV)

340) You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you,     nor fields of offerings! (2 Samuel 1:21a ESV)

341) For there the field of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul,not anointed with oil.

342) From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the nightly, the bow of Jonathan turns not back,   and the sword of Saul returned not empty. (2 Samuel 1:22 ESV)

343) Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life they were not divided; (2 Samuel 1: 23a ESV)

344)… they were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions. (2 Samuel 1: 23b ESV)

345) You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,   who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. ( 2 Samuel 1:24 ESV)

346) But Abner the son of Ner, commander of Sauls’s army took Ish-both the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim, and he made him king over Gilead and the Ashurites and Jezebel and Ephraim and Benjamin and all Israel. …. But the house of Judah followed David. (2 Samuel 2:8,9 10b ESV)

347) And each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponents side, so they fell down together. …. And Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David. (2 Samuel 2:16,17b ESV)

348) There was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. And David grew stronger and stronger,   while the house of Saul became weaker and weaker. (2 Samuel 3:1 ESV)

349) David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years, and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years. (2 Samuel 5;4,5 ESV)

350) And the Philistines left their idols there,andDavid and his men carried them away.

351) Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people. (2 Samuel 7:8 ESV)

352) When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your own body and  I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. (2 Samuel 7:12 ESV)

353) And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. 2 Samuel 8:2a ESV)

354)Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. (2 Samuel 8:2b ESV)

355) And David took the shields of gold that were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem.  And from Beth and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took very much bronze. (2 Samuel 8:8 ESV)

356) And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, (2 Samuel 9:10a ESV)

357) …that your master’s grandson may have bread to eat. But Mephibosheth your masters grandson shall always eat at my table. (2 Samuel 9:10b ESV)

358) And the king said, “let him dwell apart in his own house;    he is not to come into my presence.” (2 Samuel 14:24a ESV)

359) So Absalom lived apart in his own house  and  did not come into the king’s presence. (2 Samuel 14 :24b ESV)

360) Now Absolom had set Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Amasa was the son of a man named Ithaca the Ishmaelite, who had married Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.And Israel    and Absolom encamped in the land of Gilead.

361) The battle spreadover the face of all the country, andthe forest devoured more people that day than the sword. (2 Samuel 18:8 ESV)

362) And Absolom happened to meet the servants of David. Abloom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was suspended between heaven and earth while the mule that was under him went on. (2 Samuel 18:9)

363) So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah flowed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem. (2  Samuel 20:2 ESV)

364) There was war again between the Philistines and Israel, and David went down together with his servants, and they fought against the philistines. And David grew weary.

365) These four were descended from the giants in Gath,  and  they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants. (2 Samuel 21:22 ESV)

366) Then the earth reeled and rocked;  the foundations of the heaven trembled and quaked, because he was angry. (2 Samuel 22:8 ESV)
