Chapter Nine: The Major Prophets
1206)Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; …(Isaiah 1:2 ESV)
In this verse, God is openly and purposefully addressing both worlds at the same time. Both are being told to listen up!
1207) And the daughter of Zion is left like a booth in a vineyard, and a lodge in a cucumber field, like a besieged city. (Isaiah 1;7b ESV)
1208) I will turn my hand against you and will set away your dross with lye and remove all your alloy,(Isaiah 1:25 ESV)
1209) This is a vision Isaiah son of Amos saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. (Isaiah 2:1 NLT)
1210) For the Lord’s teaching will go out from Zion, his word will go out from Jerusalem. (Isaiah 2:3b NLT)
1211) He will cut down the tall cedars of Lebanon and all the mighty oaks of Bashan. (Isaiah 2:13 NLT)
1212) He will break down every high tower and every fortified wall. (Isaiah 2:15 NLT)
1213) The Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s armies will take away from Jerusalem and Judah everything they they depend on. (Isaiah 3:1 NLT)
1214) For Jerusalem will stumble and Judah will fall. (Isaiah 3:8 NLT)
1215) And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city. (Isaiah 12:26 ESV)
1216) Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness. (Isaiah 1:27 ESV)
1217) It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills. (Isaiah 2:2 ESV)
1218) Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,to the house of the God of Jacob, (Isaiah 2:3a ESV)
1219) …that he may teach us his way and that we may walk in his paths. (Isaiah 2:3b ESV)
1220) For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.(Isaiah 2:3c ESV)

1227)The vineyard of the Lord of Hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting.(Isaiah 5:7a ESV)
1228) Then shall the lambs graze as in their pasture, and nomads shall eat among the ruins of the rich. (Isaiah 5:17 ESV)
1229) Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the wholeearth is full of his glory. (Isaiah 6:3b ESV)
1230) Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and dwell in the midst of a people of clean lips, for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. (Isaiah 6:5 ESV)

1242) The cowand the bear shall graze; their young shall lie dow together… (Isaiah 11:7 ESV)
1243)The nursing child shall play over the hole of the Cobra and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. (Isaiah 11:8 ESV)
1244) He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel and gather
the dispersed of Judah… (Isaiah 11:12 ESV)
1245) Ephriam shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not harass Ephriam.(Isaiah 11:13 ESV)
1246) …let this be known in all the earth. Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 12:5b,6 ESV)
1247) I myself have commanded my consecrated ones, and have summoned my mighty men to execute my anger, my proudly exulting ones. (Isaiah 13:3 ESV)
1248) Behold, the day of the Lord comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it. (Isaiah 13: 9 ESV)
1249) Therefore I will make the heaves tremble and the earth will be shaken out of its place,… (Isaiah 13:13 ESV)
1250) And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah. (Isaiah 13:19 ESV)
1251) For the Lord will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and will set them in their own land, and sojourners will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob. (Isaiah 14:1 ESV)
1252) The cypress rejoice at you, the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since you were laid low, no woodcutter comes up against us. (Isaiah 14: 8 ESV)
1253) For at the asset of Luhith they go weeping; on the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of destruction. (Isaiah 15: 5b ESV)
1254) When the oppressor is no more, and destruction has ceased, … (Isaiah 16:4b ESV)
1255) …and he who tramples underfoot has vanished from the land, the throne will be established in steadfast love, (Isaiah 16:4c ESV)
1256) And in that day the glory of Jacob will be brought low, and the fat of his flesh will grow lean. (Isaiah 17:4 ESV)
1257) …and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them. (Isaiah 19:1b ESV)
1258) And the Lord will strike Egypt, striking and healing, and they will return to the Lord, (Isaiah 19:22a ESV)
1259) …and he will listen to their plea for mercy and heal them. (Isaiah 19:22b ESV)
1260) Fallen, Fallen is Babylon, and all the carved images of her gods he has shattered to the ground. (Isaiah 21: 9b ESV)
1261) The watchman says: “Morning comes, and also he night. If you will inquire, inquire come back again.” (Isaiah 21:12 ESV)
1262) For they have fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, from the bent bow, and from the press of battle. (Isaiah 21:15 ESV)
1263) All of your leaders have fled together, without the bow they were captured. (Isaiah 22:3 ESV)
1264)Chariots fill your beautiful valleys, and charioteers storm your gates. (Isaiah 22:7 NLT)
1265) He told you to shave your heads in sorrow for your sins and wear cloths of burlap to show your remorse. (Isaiah 22:1b NLT)
1266) And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. (Isaiah 22:21b ESV)
We see this parallel many times. Tradition does not make us part of the family of God. If we live in Jerusalem we are there by choice. The house of Judah were those who had been born into that house. That did not automatically mean that they recognized the meaning of being a part. We need to be both a part of “the house of Judah” and a resident of Jerusalem.
1267) …but her merchandise will supply abundant food and fine clothingfor those who dwell before the Lord. (Isaiah 23: 18b ESV)
1268) … destruction falls like rain from heavens and the foundations of the earth shake(Isaiah 24:18b NLT)
1269) On that day the Lord will punish the host of heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. (Isaiah 24: 21 ESV)
1270) Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, … (Isaiah 24:23a ESV)
1271)…for the Lord of Hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, …(Isaiah 24:23b ESV)
1272) Therefore strong peoples will glorify you, cities of ruthless nations will fear you. (Isaiah 25:3 ESV)
1273) On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-ages wine, of rich food full of marrow, of well aged wine well refined. (Isaiah 25: 6 ESV)
1274) He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces. (Isaiah 25:8 ESV)
1275) For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain, and Moab shall be trampled down in a dunghill. (Isaiah 25: 10 ESV)
1276) Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise.(Isaiah 26:15a ESV)
1277) You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy. (Isaiah 26: 15b ESV)
1278) In days to come, Jacob shall take root, Israel shall blossom and put forth shoots and fill the whole world with fruit. (Isaiah 27: 8 ESV)
1279) In that day from the river Euphrates to the brook of Egypt the Lord will thresh out the grain, and you will be gleaned one by one, O people of Israel. (Isaiah27:12 ESV)
1280) … and those who were lost in the land of Assyria and those who were driven out of the land of Egyptwill come and worship the Lord on the holy mountain at Jerusalem. (Isaiah 27:13 ESV)
1281) “Behold, I am the one who has laid a foundation in Zion,a stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation.” (Isaiah 28: 16 ESV)
1282) And the Lord said: Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, … (Isaiah 28:20 ESV)
1283) …they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob and they will stand in awe of the God of Israel.(Isaiah 29:23b ESV)
1284) …and its breaking is like that of a potters vessel that is smashed so ruthless that among its fragments not a shard is food with which to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up the water out of the cistern. (Isaiah 30:14 ESV)
1285) And on every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks of running water, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. (Isaiah 30:25 ESV)
1286) Instead, you will see Zion as a place of holy festivals. You will see Jerusalem a city quiet and secure. (Isaiah 33:20 NLT)
1287) Moreover, the light of the moon will be as bright as the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, (Isaiah 33:26a ESV)
1288) in the day when the Lord binds up the brokenness of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by the blow. (Isaiah 30:26b ESV)
1289) And no inhabitant will say, “I am sick”, the people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity. (Isaiah 33: 24 ESV)

1294) I have cut down its tallest cedars and its finest cypress trees. (Isaiah 37:24b NLT)
1295) For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant and out of Zion a band of survivors.(Isaiah 37:32 ESV)
1296)I will defend you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and will defend this city. (Isaiah 38:6 ESV)
1297) A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.(Isaiah 40:3 ESV)
1298) Every valley shall be lifted up and every mountain shall become level(Isaiah 40:4) 1299) And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together (Isaiah 40:5)
1300) Go up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news. (Isaiah 40:9 ESV)
1301) I was the first to tell Zion, ‘Look! Help is on the way!’ I will send Jerusalem a messenger with good news. (Isaiah 41:27)
1302) I am the Lord,: I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you. (Isaiah 42: 8 ESV)
1303) …a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind; (Isaiah 42:6 ESV)
1304) …to bring out the prisoners from the dungeonfrom the prison those who sit in darkness.(Isaiah 42: 7 ESV)
1305) I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground.(Isaiah 42:16b ESV)
1306) …bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth. (Isaiah 43:6b ESV)
1307) I have decreed complete destruction for Jacob and shame for Israel. (Isaiah 43: 28b NLT)
1308) But now hear, O Jacob my servant. Israel whom I have chosen: thus says the Lord who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you. (Isaiah 44:2 ESV)
1309) Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on

1325) They shall feed along the ways; on all bare heights shall be their pasture.(Isaiah 49: 9b ESV)
1326)Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; (Isaiah 49: 13a ESV)
1327) Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me. (Isaiah 49: 16 ESV)
1328) Behold, by my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a desert;(Isaiah 50:2b ESV)
1329) I make their fish stink for lack of water and die of thirst. (Isaiah 50:2b ESV)
1330 I cloth the heavenswith blackness and make sackcloth their covering.(Isaiah 50: 3a ESV)
1331) Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath;(Isaiah 51: 6a ESV)
1332) …for the heavens vanish like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a garnet, … (Isaiah 51: 6b ESV
1333) …and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever,… (Isaiah 51: 6c ESV)
1334) And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; (Isaiah 51:11a ESV)
1335) These two calamities have fallen on you: Desolation and destruction, famine and war. (Isaiah 51:19 NLT)
1336) Awake, awake, put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; …(Isaiah 52:1 ESV)
Does it look to you like a simple repetition? Not exactly. Zion is the spiritual city, while Jerusalem is the physical city. Emphasis can depend on the context. In some places Jerusalem can be the spiritual city while something else, perhaps Judah is the physical.
1337) Shake yourself from the dust and arise; be seated O Jerusalem; loose your bonds from your neck, O captive daughter of Zion. (Isaiah 52: 2 ESV)
1338) For thus says the Lord: “ You were sold for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money.” (Isaiah 52: 3 ESV)
1339) How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness. (Isaiah 52:7 ESV)
1340) …for the Lord has comforted his people; he has redeemed Jerusalem. (Isaiah 52: 9 ESV)
1341) For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left, and your offspring will possess the nations and will people the desolate cities. (Isaiah 54:3 ESV)
1342) For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you. (Isaiah 5: 10 ESV)
1343) …no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgement. (Isaiah 54: 17 ESV)
1344) Behold, you shall call a nation that you did not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you. (Isaiah 55: 5a ESV)
1345) …the mountains and the hills before you break break forth into singing, and the trees of the field shall clap their hands. (Isaiah 55:12 ESV)
It’s not about mountains being anthropomorphized. It’s about the mountains (the spiritual) and the field (the physical) interacting.
1346) Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; (Isaiah 55:13a ESV)
1347) instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle.(Isaiah 55:13b ESV)
1348) …for soon my salvation will come, and my righteousness be revealed. (Isaiah 56:1b ESV)
1349) …who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it, and keeps his hand from doing evil. (Isaiah 56: 2b ESV)
1350) …and holds fast my covenant— these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; (Isaiah 56: 6b,7a ESV)
1351) But he who takes refuge in me shall possess the land and shall inherit my holy mountain. (Isaiah 57:13b ESV)
1352)I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, … (Isaiah 57:15b ESV)
1353) Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice heard on high. Is such a fast that I choose a day for a person to humble himself? (Isaiah 58:4b ESV)
1354)Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? (Isaiah 58::5a ESV)
1355) Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness to undo the straps of the yoke,(Isaiah 58: 6 ESV)
1356) If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day,… (Isaiah 58: 13a ESV)
1357) then you shall take delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth,…(Isaiah 58: 14a ESV)
1358) We all growl like bears; we moan and moan like doves; (Isaiah 59:11a ESV)
1359) …we hope for justice, but there is none; for salvation is far from us. (Isaiah 59:11b ESV)
1360) For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples, (Isaiah 60:2a ESV)

1367) Your people shall all be righteous; they shall possess the land forever. (Isaiah 60:21 ESV)
1368)…but you shall be called the priests of the Lord; they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God; (Isaiah 61:6a ESV)
1369) …you shall eat the wealth of the nations and in their glory you shall boast. (Isaiah 61:7 ESV)
1370) You will possess a double portion of prosperity in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours. (Isaiah 61: 7b NLT)

1373) Your holy cities have become a wilderness, Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. (Isaiah 65: 10 ESV)
1374) …a people who provoke me to my face continually, sacrificing in gardens and making offering on bricks. (Isaiah 65:3 ESV)
1375) …because they made offerings on the mountains and insulted me on the hills, …(Isaiah 65:7 ESV)
1476) I will bring forth offspring from Jacob, and from Judah possessors of my mountains; (Isaiah 65: 9a ESV)
1377) …my chosen shall possess it, and my servants shall dwell there. (Isaiah 65: 9b ESV)
1378) “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, (Isaiah 65:17a ESV)
1379) …and the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind.(Isaiah 65:17b ESV)
1380) Thus says the Lord: Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; (Isaiah 66:1 ESV)
1381) For by fire will the Lord enter into judgement, and by his sword, with all flesh and those slain by the Lord will be many. (Isaiah 66:16 ESV)
1382) …and I will set a sign among them. And from them I will send survivors to the nations,
to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow to Tubal and Javin, to the coastlands far away, (Isaiah 66:19a ESV)
1383) …that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my

1384) See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, (Jeremiah 1:10a ESV)

1390) And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land, (Jeremiah 1:18a ESV)
1391) …against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. (Jeremiah 1: 18 ESV)
1392) I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride,(Jeremiah 2:2a ESV)
1393) …how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.(Jeremiah 2:2b ESV)
1394) They did not say, “Where is the Lord who brought us up from, the land of Egyptwho led us in the wilderness, (Jeremiah 6b ESV)
1395) In a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, (Jeremiah 2:6a ESV)
1396) …in a land that none pass through, where no man dwells?” (Jeremiah 2: 6c ESV)
1397) …the shepherds transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do not profit. (Jeremiah 2:8 ESV)
1398) …for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves,(Jeremiah 2:13a ESV)
1399) …broken cisterns that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:13b ESV)
1400) Yes, on every high hill and under every green tree you bowed down like a whore. (Jeremiah 2:20b ESV)
1401) …who say to a tree, You are my father, and to the stone, You gave me birth, …(Jeremiah 2:27a ESV)
1402) Shout to Judah, and broadcast to Jerusalem!(Jeremiah 4:5 NLT)
1403) The priests will be struck with horror; and the prophets will be appalled. (Jeremiah 4:9b NLT)
1404) …I have discovered a conspiracy against me among the people of Judah and Jerusalem. (Jeremiah 11:9b NLT)

There have just been several nearly identical uses of Judah and Jerusalem clustered together. Remember Judah is a people (the physical) while Jerusalem is a place (the spiritual); the physical is usually mentioned first.
1413) This is what I will do to this place and its people, says the Lord. (Jeremiah 19:12a NLT)
You may have noticed that in several cases the prophet of the Lord was require to perform some act of brokenness. Those acts always seem somewhat strange. The following is one example: 1414) Thus the Lord said to me” “Make yourself straps and yokebars, and put them on
your neck. Send word to the king of Edom, the king of Moab, the king of the sons
of Ammon, the king of Tyre, and Sidon by the hand of the envoys who have come
to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. (Jeremiah 27:2,3 ESV).
Such physical acts always represented what God was about to do. He was about to come in judgement. In this case they represented coming bondage. They were being given a visible representation of the spiritual judgement that was about to fall on them. It was an advance warning in a way they could see in the physical world. We have seen many instances of the physical being the mirror image of the spiritual counterpart. They always appear together.
What the prophet had been instructed to do may seem strange to us. It may even seem to make no sense at all. However, it represented what was about to take place in the invisible world. Those for whom that message was intended would have understood. For them it was a call to action. They were expected to respond to God.
Most often what took place in the lives of men was the physical or visible part. In this type of case, something peculiar was being deliberately acted out in such a way that it could not be ignored. It was presented by a prophet, someone who would be recognized as having a word from God.
1415) …for I am a father to Israel and Ephraim is my firstborn. (Jeremiah 31:9b ESV)
Ephraim is often used to stand for Israel. The physical normally precedes the spiritual. Since Ephraim is the firstborn, there would have been others that followed. In this verse, the physical is stated; the spiritual (Judah) is implied.
If, by this point, you are comfortable understanding that while the battles described in the Bible were real battles fought with actual swords they often represented the aggressive way Christians are expected to “fight the battle” to win the lost, there is also another way battles are initiated. The enemy can also be on the attack. When we are “under siege” we may be on the defense. Think about what these verses are telling us.
1416) …just as the heavens cannot be measured and the foundations of the earth cannot be explained… (Jeremiah 31: 37b NLT)

As close to the Lord as Jeremiah was, he had his own problem staying strong in his faith. He sank in the mud! However, all was not lost. An Ethiopian (unbeliever) came to his rescue.
1430) Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the rags and cloths between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so. Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard. (Jeremiah 38:12,13 ESV)

We normally think that all of Gods’ promises are positive. There are also many warnings that spell out the consequences for disobedience in no uncertain terms.

The emphasis here is remarkable. Three times in a single verse a powerful judgement is being proclaimed by the Lord. They have not lived in obedience and judgement has arrived.

There are actually more ways this relationship comes up than you can shake a stick at. (After all, how many ways are there to shake a stick?) Some ways are easily overlooked. They come up a lot in Ezekiel.

I had thought I had located as many verses as possible that display the physical and the spiritual working together. I had found them by carefully searching BOTH the ESV and the NLT. Never-the-less, in a single hour, and in a single chapter, I unexpectedly located EIGHT additional verses displaying the relationship. Was I sloppy in doing my original research? I didn’t think so. Are they difficult to spot? No. But, they are easy to overlook.
While the incredible number of them you are seeing here is far from exhaustive, the frequency of their appearance together is clear evidence that they function together in scripture. The physical and the spiritual are found working together in every kind of situation imaginable, both in scripture and in our world today.
The importance of that interaction is not one that we have recognized to the degree that’s called for. When we realize how important it is in scripture, it instantly becomes much easier to understand how important it is to us and to the way we live our lives today. We are not alone. When God said that He would be with us even to the end of the earth, He meant it and the way the two work together is the proof.
